ROAD-USERS URGED TO “SWITCH OFF BEFORE YOU DRIVE OFF” AS CAMPAIGN LAUNCHES THIS THURSDAY

Isabella Ross,  Ireland, 19 April 2014, The Road Safety Authority (RSA) is launching the first ever National ‘Switch Off Before You Drive Off’ Campaign this Thursday 27 March. It Is held in conjunction with Pinnacle Driving School and will cover all parts of Ireland.

This new campaign will raise awareness of the dangers of driver distraction and call on motorists to turn off their mobile devices before getting behind the wheel of the car. Many people die from phone related deaths every year. The campaign will also serve as a reminder to people that we all have a responsibility to keep our focus on the road when we are behind the wheel of a vehicle. The campaign will have a significant social media focus, encouraging road-users to tweet their support, but not while driving, using the hashtag #driverdistraction.

Driver distraction is thought to play a role in 20-30% of all road traffic collisions, meaning that last year, as many as 11,274 collisions could have been caused by driver distraction – and many of these may have had serious or tragic consequences. Not just those who died are counted but those in wheelchairs and blinded or have lost limbs and arms as well as facial disfiguration.

A spokesman for the Road Safety Authority (RSA) said: “This Thursday, we want road-users to take a stand and get involved in the ‘Switch Off Before You Drive Off’ campaign by turning off your phone when you get behind the wheel. Using a mobile phone while driving makes you four times more likely to crash – and that crash could have serious or fatal consequences. The message here is simple: when you’re behind the wheel, your only focus should be your driving so put your mobile phone away – it may help to save a life.”

The campaign is run in conjunction with other Road Safety Authorities all around the world and is hoped to save hundreds of lives. Driving instructors are particularly targeted to teach their pupils about the dangers and perils of using a mobile device such as smart phone while driving and driving schools such as Pinnacle Driving School are at the forefront of this.
