Marketing expert explains his mistakes

Jim McCarthy tells how he succumbed to the allure of on line snake oil salesmen in an attempt to improve his own marketing skills. “Dirt-cheap offers are not always worth what you pay for them. Sometimes you wind up paying a whole lot more than they’re worth.”

Jim McCarthy, the creative force behind Midex Business Solutions, has a new post up on his blog http://midexbusinesssolutions.com/the-moth-and-the-flame/ . He talks about being suckered into one of the “build your business – drive customers to your website” marketing scams that are everywhere on the Internet.

“I’m ashamed to say, I got burned. It was totally my fault too. My credit card company sent me a warning that it was a scam, but I didn’t believe them,” Mr. McCarthy said. “It didn’t take me very long to discover I was getting taken to the cleaners. Fortunately, my credit card company helped me get out of the hole I jumped into.”

This latest post is one of a series on his blog where McCarthy talks about his run-ins with modern day snake oil salesmen of various stripes. While there are some legitimate companies that give real help with marketing, plenty more are just vacuum cleaners looking for a wallet to suck dry.

“I’m sharing my failures so you don’t have to repeat the my marketing blunders. I also give you rundowns on what worked and how well it worked. That way, you can see what works and you can build on that,” McCarthy said.
